Reiki is a gentle, holistic energy-healing practice that originated in Japan in the early 20th century with Mikao Usui. The word “Reiki” comes from two Japanese words:
-
Rei – universal, spiritual, higher wisdom
-
Ki – life force energy (similar to chi in Chinese or prana in Indian traditions)
Together, Reiki means “universal life force energy.” This energy can be channeled through the hands to support balance and healing in the body, mind, and spirit.
During the session you are fully clothed, on a massage table. The practitioner gently places their hands either directly on or just above specific areas of your body and act as a channel for the energy. You may feel warmth, tingling, deep relaxation, or sometimes even emotions releasing.
Why it's beneficial
-
While experiences can vary from person to person, many report:
-
Deep relaxation and stress relief – calming the nervous system and quieting the mind.
-
Emotional balance – releasing anxiety, tension, or emotional blockages.
-
Support for physical healing – complementing medical treatment by easing pain, fatigue, or side effects.
-
Improved sleep – many people feel more rested and grounded afterwards.
-
Enhanced clarity and focus – supporting decision-making and emotional resilience.
-
Spiritual connection – fostering a sense of peace, harmony, and alignment with life.
Who it would benefit
-
Reiki is considered safe and non-invasive, so it can be used by a wide range of people:
-
Anyone under stress – seeking calm, balance, or relaxation.
-
People experiencing physical pain or illness – to support comfort alongside medical care.
-
Those dealing with anxiety, grief, or depression – for emotional relief and grounding.
-
People in recovery – from surgery, trauma, or exhaustion.
-
Those on a spiritual journey – looking to connect more deeply with themselves.
Reiki is often used in wellness centres, hospices, hospitals, and private practice. Many find it helpful as a complementary therapy alongside traditional medicine.
